The Sangha Pagoda was built in the Tang Dynasty. It was originally located in Sizhou City on the north bank of Hongze Lake. It was dedicated to the eminent monk Sangha (624~710) from the Western Regions (with the titles of “Great Sage Bodhisattva” and “Sizhou Great Sage”). The true form of the founder of the temple, hence the name. During the Shaoxing period of the Southern Song Dynasty (1131–1162), eminent monks from Sizhou and others came to Zhenjiang to worship the Sangha statue and built the Sangha Pagoda on Shouchiu Mountain to avoid the war.
